Unfortunately, you can’t just terminate your recording contract unless you have an extremely good legal reason, such as impossibility or performance or frustration of purpose.
If you are terminally ill or there’s some other circumstance that prevents you from fulfilling your contract, you should able to get out of it. Also, if there’s civil unrest, war, or some other natural disaster that prevents the contract from being enforced, you could possibly get out of it. However, the courts are very reluctant to let someone out of a signed agreement, especially if they were advised to have adequate representation before signing it.
I am a huge fan of the Internet and all of the ways it can help you in your day-to-day life. It’s an incredible tool that can allow you to reach the entire world, right from your home.
The first thing you should do is build a Web site. Any business that is not on the Web is falling behind. Fortunately, building and posting a site has never been easier. There are a number of places where you can get a free templates. Simply add your information and you have a Web site. These companies also offer free Web hosting. In some cases, you may even be able to get your own personalized domain name. If not, it doesn’t cost much to get one.
There are also a number of applications that allow you to build a site quickly and easily, such as Front Page and Dreamweaver. Most of these applications are WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors, which allow you to build a site without having to read and write code. They work very much like word processing software, and the learning curve is not that steep. Then, you can find very affordable hosting for your site, and even set up e-commerce so that you can sell your products on line. There is no better time that now to start learning about this incredible opportunity. Once you have your site up and running, you should think about how to point people to it. Unless somebody already has your specific URL (uniform resource locator), he’s not just going to stumble on your site by accident. Your Internet marketing plan should start with getting the highest search engine placement you can.
Now that you’ve got your business set up and ready to go, how are you going to get your business identity out there to the buying public? How do you plan to get customers? How are you going to keep them? If you have produced a CD, how will you get it to the people who will buy it? I don’t care what type of business you are in, it’s all about marketing and sales. If you aren’t selling, you aren’t making money.
If you submit your material to a major publisher or record label without them requesting you to do so, you’ll probably receive your material back with a huge stamp on it that says “RETURN UNSOLICITED.” The reasons for these companies not accepting material from unknown outside sources are many. I will discuss three of the main ones here.
“The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.”
—King Henry VI, Part II.
Even though this line by William Shakespeare may sound funny, many argue that he was not saying that we should actually kill all the lawyers.Rather, he meant that if there were no lawyers, there would be nobody to be the advocate for the common man.
One of the most important decisions a new act must make is whether to sign a recording contract. If you are lucky enough to be offered a deal with a major record label, you may think, “I’ve finally made it!” But have you? The answer depends on a number of factors.
If you have decided to take a proactive approach and make your own CD or demo, you will definitely want to read this. Making a demonstration recording or a full-blown master recording will involve a number of important issues. After all, this recording can make or break your career, so you shouldn't take it lightly. Also, making good-sounding recordings isn't as easy as it looks, much less as easy as it sounds.
